Wood Grains - An Explanation

 

Face Grain

The most common types of cutting boards and butcher blocks available today are face grain. Face grain cutting boards are easy and cheap to make, therefore they sell fast. Face grain cutting boards dull the knife blade and shows obvious marks in the grain from any amount of usage.

Edge Grain

Edge grain cutting boards are more durable than face grain cutting boards and is easier on the knife blade than face grain cutting boards.

End Grain

End grain cutting boards are the most durable, and dulls the knife the least. Endgrain shows little to know signs of use as when the cut is taking place, the fibers spread apart to allow the blade to pass through.
